It must have been a good vacation— I have been back at work for three days and I want another one.
Though I did take a picture or two of the leaning tower of Pisa. How about one from the top of that bell tower?
This is actually a “full” holiday this time. Except for March break when I was 18, every other time I went to Europe I had to do something: present at a conference or sing with a choir as well as tour around. This time my wife and I will be staying in Firenza for a few days with a side trip to Pisa and then the other few days will be in Roma with a side trip to the Vatican city. The only thing I’m not looking forward to is the jet lag; however, we won’t have to sing the next day like the previous three trips.
I must remember to charge up the batteries and free up the memory of the digital camera before I go.
At work I used VNC to connect from my desktop PC to another win2k box in a lab a floor and a building away. From that box I dialed out using PCanywhere to a win2k box in a transformer station near Sudbury.
Today it was a Terminal Services client through the VPN to a win2k server box. From there I used Putty as an SSH client to connect to a FreeBSD box. Then I ran screen on that.
Once again MS Word gets me very discouraged. Why can’t it handle section, page, and appendix numbering properly? Why can’t it arrange figures or other “floats” nicely? Why do I have to go to websites to find, not solutions, but work arounds?
Memo to self: if a client wants a report in future s/he will get a PDF file. I’ll choose how that PDF is generated. LaTeX is my preference. I look up how to do a particular task, appendix numbering for example, write a macro and, forever after “it just works”. If the client wants MS Word then I charge many $$ extra for the wasted time it takes to do the formatting. WYSIWYG indeed: what I see is what I don’t want MS Word!
